Carlos Jones

While most people know Carlos Jones as a pioneer of American Reggae due to his 40+ years on the scene with groups such as I-Tal/USA, First Light, and now the PLUS Band, they may not know where his musical roots sprang from. Born in rural Virginia, he spent part of his youth in Germany as his father was in the military before finally landing in Cleveland, where he began listening to all of the great music that was permeating the airwaves back in the late ‘60s/early ’70s on stations like WMMS. He also was hit by the great R&B music that was coming out during that era, and one group in particular caught his ear – Earth, Wind & Fire. Their album – All ‘n All stuck with him and had a heavy influence on his eventual singing and songwriting skills.

About the Album

All ‘n All is the eighth studio album by Earth, Wind & Fire. It was released in November 1977 on Columbia Records. The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart. All ‘n All has also been certified Triple Platinum in the US by the RIAA, Gold in Canada by Music Canada and Silver in the UK by the BPI.

“Serpentine Fire” reached number one on the Billboard Hot Soul Songs chart and number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another single, “Fantasy,” peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot Soul Songs chart and number 14 on the UK Pop Singles chart. “Fantasy” also earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song.

As an album, All ‘n All won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus. “Runnin” also won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental. Additionally, All ‘n All was nominated for an American Music Award in the category of Favorite Soul/R&B Album.
