Axios presents The Concerts at Richfield Coliseum
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Richfield Coliseum, “The Palace on the Prairie” that hosted a who’s who of rock stars from 1974 to 1994, including Bruce Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, KISS, Fleetwood Mac, and more.
Join Axios Cleveland reporter Troy Smith as he leads a panel of local music historians to talk about the most memorable concerts at the venue that will forever live in Northeast Ohio music history.
Troy Smith Bio
Troy Smith is a local writer who spent 10 years as the music critic at Cleveland.com before taking his talents to Axios, which launched its Cleveland newsletter and website two years ago.
Troy has written more stories on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame over the past decade than anyone. He’s also hosted more than a dozen storytelling events at the Music Box covering various topics such as the history of the World Series of Rock, Cleveland International Records and the Michael Stanley Band.
Janet Macoska Bio
If rock and roll has been the soundtrack of your life, photojournalist Janet Macoska has provided many of the visuals. Since 1974, Janet Macoska has been capturing rock’s greatest performers. Among the publications who have used her photos are Rolling Stone, People, US, Vogue, American Photo, Creem, 16, Teen Beat, MOJO, NY Times, and London Times. Her work has been featured at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, The Smithsonian Museum of American History, The National Portrait Gallery in London and in Hard Rock Café restaurants, hotels and casinos all around the planet.
David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, Devo, Heart, AC/DC, and The Kinks are just some of the artists who have used her work on their albums. Janet has co-authored two books with local music historian Peter Chakerian — Bruce Springsteen: Live in the Heartland and All Access Cleveland: The Rock and Roll Photography of Janet Macoska. Her photos can also be seen in David Bowie: Icon: The Definitive Photographic Collection. In 2023, she was presented with the presented with The Cleveland Arts Prize Lifetime Achievement Award in Visual Art.
Carlo Wolff Bio
Carlo Wolff has been a professional writer, journalist and pop culture historian since the early 1970s. A Northeast Ohio resident since 1986, Wolff has written for numerous publications, including The Boston Globe, the Chicago Sun Times, the St. Petersburg Times, The Plain Dealer, and Akron Beacon Journal.
His books include Cleveland Rock & Roll Memories: True and Tall Tales of the Glory Days, WIXY 1260: Pixies, Six-packs, and Supermen, and Michael Belkin’s biography Socks, Sports, Rock and Art.
Wolff’s most recent book, Invisible Soul, examines the overlooked Black music clubs, theaters venue owners and entertainers that thrived in Cleveland during the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
The goal of the Cleveland Stories Dinner Party is to bring to life some of the fun, interesting stories about Cleveland’s past – from sports, to rock ‘n roll, to Millionaire’s Row, — the series will focus on tidbits from Cleveland’s past that will really thrill the audience. The Music Box is presenting this series in partnership with the Western Reserve Historical Society’s new Cleveland History Center. We think the Cleveland History Center is one of the most important museums in Cleveland. An unknown gem that Clevelanders should know more about, and support. It is the only museum in Cleveland dedicated to preserving and documenting the history of Cleveland. The Cleveland History Center includes two mansions, the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum, Chisholm Halle Costume Wing, Research Library, Kidzibits Hands-On Gallery, rotating exhibitions, and the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel.
